TTRPG Unified System Design: When One Language Covers Everything
Back in January, I was building two systems in parallel and didn’t immediately clock that they were doing the exact same thing.
On one side: colony resources. Six categories — Vital, Industrial, Energy, Tech, Strategic, Cultural — each represented by a die. D4 if you’re barely surviving. D12 if you’re thriving. Every cycle, you roll. Your threshold is the die’s max minus your Consumption Modifier (MC). Exceed it, the die drops a step. D10 becomes D8. D8 becomes D6. D6 becomes D4. The colony bleeds out in slow motion, one pip at a time.
On the other side: equipment. A knife rated D6. Use it under enough stress, push it through enough bad rolls, and it degrades, D6 to D4. A rifle goes from D10 to D8. An armored vest from D8 to D6.
Same ladder. Same logic. Same language.
I didn’t plan this. At first it just felt like a convenient shorthand, fewer things to teach players at session zero. But the more I tested it, the more I realized what was actually happening.
The moment I knew it was more than a coincidence
Somewhere around late January, a playtest group was running short on Vital Resources. Their food supply was sitting at D4. One player, completely unrelated to that crisis, was trying to repair their combat knife, also at D4, also one bad session away from D2.
They didn’t connect the dots in the moment. Neither did I, not immediately. But I wrote a note: “Récupérer 1 EV contre 1 ND RV.” Heal one point of stress = spend one die level of Vital Resources.
Your body’s health and your colony’s food supply are the same resource, measured the same way. When you’re healing, you’re literally eating the colony’s reserves. The fiction and the mechanic were saying identical things.
That’s when the system stopped being convenient and started being coherent.
A good TTRPG unified system design means players learn one mechanic and already understand all the others.
April: the fractal clicks into place
By April, I had pushed this logic as far as it would go, and it held.
To craft a weapon in Sol Fracta, you need three things: a blueprint (costs 1 MC of Strategic Resources), access to the right building (controlled by a faction), and the raw materials (drawn from colony market by the right building.). Three distinct friction points. Three places where politics can interfere, where a deal can collapse, where someone can leverage your need against you.
You want to forge a rifle? Great. Who controls the forge? What do they want? Can you even access Strategic Resources right now, or is the colony’s innovation capacity already tapped out?
What looked like a crafting system turned out to be a political pressure machine.
And then there’s automation.
Every even step on the Automation Level (NA) — a jauge from 0 to 10 tracking how much your colony has outsourced labor to NA robots — drops Cultural Resources by 1 MC. More machines means less meaning. At NA 10, it’s a flat -5 MC Cultural. Not a warning. Not a narrative suggestion. A mechanical certainty.
The design note I wrote was blunt: “Une société sans art meurt.” A society without art dies. Sol Fracta doesn’t editorialize, it just makes sure that if you chase pure economic efficiency, the Cultural die follows the same path as everything else. D8 to D6 to D4 to nothing.
What fractal design actually means in practice
I’ve seen games that claim everything is connected but require the GM to do all the connecting manually, through fiction, through narration, through judgment calls.
Sol Fracta does it mechanically. The same die, the same threshold logic, the same downgrade step, from the smallest object to the largest infrastructure. When your knife drops from D6 to D4, it’s not a different kind of event from your food supply doing the same thing. They’re the same event at different scales.
That’s not just elegant. It’s load-bearing. It means players who understand one part of the system already understand all of it. It means the colony sheet and the character sheet aren’t two separate games sitting next to each other, they’re the same game, zoomed in or out.
The individual decision to repair your weapon uses Industrial MC. That’s the same pool that builds farms, forges armor, maintains the infrastructure. Every time a character repairs something, they’re making a resource allocation decision for the whole colony, whether they know it or not.
The fractal isn’t a metaphor. It’s the actual architecture.
I’m still figuring out where the limits of this logic are. Automation is the most recent layer, and I’m watching closely whether the Cultural penalty lands as a real constraint or just background flavor. The design intent is clear, but intent and table experience are different things.
