Augmentations as Strategic Choice in a Scarce Economy

The Tabletop RPG Augmentation System That Isn’t Cyberpunk 2077

First Try :

A list of augmentations. Each one gave you something. You picked what fit your build, you paid the cost, you were stronger. Clean. Logical. Completely wrong for what Sol Fracta is trying to do.

The problem wasn’t the mechanics. The problem was that the mechanics didn’t push back. In a game where every resource is a decision, where your colony’s food supply and your personal survival compete for the same pool of EV, and that everything as a cost, we had augmentations that just… added. No friction beyond the price. Invest 8 EV to craft, get the neural interface, be smarter forever. Cool on paper. Hollow in play.

What clicked into place, and this took longer than I’d like to admit, was treating augmentations the same way we treat every other major choice in the game. Not as loot. Not as character upgrades. As statements.


The question that changed everything: “where does it show?”

When we built the gear system, the design principle was simple: everything degrades, everything has a story, your claymore tells people something about you the moment they see it. An augmentation needs to do the same thing. It needs to cost enough that the colony feels it. It needs to be visible enough that the world reacts to it. And it needs to leave a mark on who you are, not just what you can do.

That last part became the Essence Cap mechanic. Every augmentation, at installation, rolls a d10. The result determines which Essence sees its maximum locked at 4. Biologique, Psychologique, Sociale, Culturelle, Existentielle, one of them gets capped. Permanently.

Most tabletop RPG augmentation systems treat implants as stat bonuses, Sol Fracta treats them as irreversible bets on who your character is becoming.

The player and GM build the why together. A bionic arm rolls Existential (EE). Maybe Robert’s grip is stronger now, but he stopped feeling the texture of things he touches. The operation changed the way he experiences the world, and something deep in him knows it. That’s not punishment. That’s character.

Two augmentations capping the same Essence pushes it to 3. Three to 2. At 0, that part of your humanity is gone. Not metaphorically.


Two paths. Two different kinds of cost.

Here’s where the design splits into territory that surprised me. Cybernetic and genetic augmentations feel fundamentally different in the world, they should feel different mechanically too.

Cybernetics are visible. Immediately. Your arm is a machine. Your eyes glow. Other colonists see it, other factions read it, and the social implications are real. Hard tech, high cost, high legibility.

Genetics are intimate. You look like everyone else, until you don’t. Faster healing. Resistance to toxins that should kill you. Vision that shouldn’t exist in a human retina. The colony might not know. The world eventually finds out.

Both paths carry the same philosophical weight. Neither is purely beneficial. Neither is cheap.

The Neural Interface is the one I keep coming back to as the purest example of the philosophy. It’s based on where Neuralink tech realistically goes in fifty years: direct brain-machine linkage for data retrieval and shared memory access. 8 EV to craft — that’s a significant investment. The drain is real. And what does it do for you? The ability to control your assistant and robots remotely by your mind. It can give you advantage on linked rolls. That’s it. Not invincibility. It’s strong. The cost is you loose a piece of your humanity. Ressources when you build it. Ressources when you repair it. And possible interaction in roleplay. Do you think people like the one’s who can make a call and text email without nobody noticing in a world where paranoïa could reach a peak?

The Integrated Cyber Module at 20 EV is endgame. It’s what happens when you’ve committed fully, not just to augmentation, but to the idea that you’re building toward something. At that cost, your colony had better believe in what you’re becoming.

Genetic modifications run on what CRISPR-adjacent tech plausibly becomes after another century of development: targeted gene expression, metabolic regulation, tissue architecture changes. Toxic Resistance isn’t a superpower, it’s a genome adapted to survive an environment that wants to kill you. Accelerated Regeneration is modified tissue architecture, not a healing spell. The plausibility matters to me. Sol Fracta’s SF isn’t there to impress you with jargon, it’s there to make the stakes feel real.

The interesting mechanical tension: Muscular Reinforcement and a Bionic Arm give almost identical effects. The choice between them isn’t mechanical optimization, it’s identity. Do you want the world to see the machine, or not?


What we got wrong, then got right

Early iteration had augmentations with no Essence cap. You just paid, you got the benefit. Three sessions of playtesting confirmed what I already suspected: players were treating them like stat upgrades. Pick the useful ones, ignore the others, never think about them again.

The moment we added the random cap, and more importantly, the moment we made the player and GM construct the narrative reason for that cap together, augmentations became the most interesting decisions in the room. Suddenly players were hesitating. Not because the math was bad. Because they were asking “what does this cost me as a person?”

That’s the design working.

The Essence cap also creates a real clock if you stack multiple augmentations. Two caps on the same Essence means your max drops to 3. You can push further, but you’re actively trading away pieces of yourself. At some point, the question isn’t whether you can afford the next implant economically. It’s whether you can afford it as a human being.

The Apex items (Module and Code) are there to mark the end of a personal arc, not a power plateau. Getting to 20 EV of craft investment, sustained through colony drain across multiple cycles, means you’ve been building toward this. It should feel like a chapter ending, not a loadout completion.


One thing I’m still watching

The visible/invisible split between cybernetic and genetic, I think it works on paper. In play, I want to see whether GMs actually remember to use it. Whether the faction you’re negotiating with reacts to your bionic arm. Whether the colony council trusts someone differently when their eyes glow at night. The mechanical costs are clear. The social costs live in the fiction, and that part needs attention at the table.

If it lands the way I think it should, an augmentation tells you something about a character before they speak. It’s a choice they made, probably in a desperate moment, that the world will never let them forget.
