You get an 8. The threshold is 7. Your food die becomes a D8.

In three cycles, it’ll be a D4. In five, it won’t exist.

Welcome to Sol Fracta, where resources don’t decrease. They die.

August 2025: The Mirror That Made Sense (Until It Didn’t)

The first version came from a clean philosophical idea: mirror the player-facing roll-under mechanic, but for the colony.

Players roll 1d10 and want to go under their threshold. Resources should work the same way. Roll under the scarcity threshold, the resource holds. Roll over, trouble. The design philosophy I wrote down at the time: “low rolls = wise management, high rolls = lessons in humility.” I liked that. It felt earned.

The Progress Counter built on this: a positive MC gave automatic success plus a roll for surplus only. Accumulate five surplus points and you get a D6 control roll. Surplus expired if unused, because passive accumulation felt like cheating gravity.

The system was coherent. It also had a problem I couldn’t see yet because I was too close to it.

The mirror framing was conceptually satisfying but mechanically thin. Thresholds felt arbitrary in play. Players couldn’t intuit why this specific number mattered. And the Progress Counter was adding cognitive overhead for a game I was trying to keep rule-lite. Three layers for what should be one gut punch. I shelved it and let the design breathe.

January 2026: Six Dice on the Table

When I came back to resources, I stopped thinking about them as mechanics and started thinking about them as objects.

What if a resource wasn’t a number? What if it was a die? Not a die you roll to represent something, but a die that is the thing itself. Its size is its health. Its degradation is physical, visible, tactile.

The TTRPG resource die system in Sol Fracta runs on six categories: Vital (food, meds), Industrial, Energetic, Technological, Strategic, Cultural. Each is a die on a ladder: D0, D4, D6, D8, D10, D12. D0 means the resource isn’t available on the market, only in the faction controlled buildings. D12 means abundance. Every step between is a state of the world.

Consumption per cycle: Affected by the buildings o nthe colony. These aren’t arbitrary. They reflect what a colony actually bleeds through just by existing.

The roll: threshold = max die minus MC. Roll under or equal, stable. Roll over, scarcity, the die downgrades, a tragic event hits. Two resources downgrade the same cycle and it’s not a crisis, it’s a catastrophe.

The example that made it click during testing: Vital resources at D4, MC at negative 3. Threshold is 1. You roll a 3. That’s a famine. Not “you lose 3 food points.” A famine. The D4 becomes D0 and something terrible happens in the colony because people are dying.

The die shrinks. That’s the whole thing.

Buildings Don’t Give You Food. They Shift the Odds.

This was the philosophical anchor that everything else followed from. A Tier 1 farm doesn’t hand you food. It pushes your MC up by +2 for Vital resources. Which means your threshold climbs as your production increases. Which means you’re less likely to fail the roll. Buildings don’t give you resources, they modify the probability of scarcity.

Cycle 1: Vital at D6, MC at -3. Threshold is 3. Fifty percent chance of losing a die level every single cycle. The colony is fragile, everyone feels it. Cycle 5: two farms built, MC now -1, threshold pushed to 5. Same die, fundamentally different odds. Not because someone tallied harvests, but because infrastructure was built. Cycle 10: that cumulative shift means the D6 isn’t just surviving, it’s growing.

You roll to see if you gain a die level instead. Players feel that. No spreadsheet was consulted at any point in this journey.

The Voluntary Downgrade

Players can also extract resources intentionally from the market, affecting the MC down on purpose, to build things, or heal, or just on a bad consequence. Want to heal a character? Get -1 MC Vital on this cycle. Which creates this quietly powerful fiction: healing someone means drawing on the colony’s food and medical supply. The colony’s health and the character’s health are the same economy.

The Event Generator Nobody Designed

When a resource fails and downgrades, something happens. Vital resources fail: famine. Energetic fails: blackout. Two resources downgrade the same cycle? The game escalates automatically. Revolt. Collapse. Something the GM never planned, players never expected. Not a table of 100 random events. Just: two dice failed this cycle, the colony is now in crisis, everyone at the table figures out why.

When I first described this to a playtest group, someone said something I’ve kept: “When you watch your D4 food with a -3 MC and you have to roll 1, it feels scary. When you fail and your D4 become D0, you feel the colony dying under your feet.”

That’s the design working.

March–April 2026: Automation and the Cost of Winning

The last major layer was the Automation Level (NA), a gauge from 0 to 10.

Automation is good for resource management and corrosive to culture. Always. No exceptions. It’s not a moral stance in the fiction, it’s a mechanical truth that creates a moral question at the table.

Odd NA tiers give free project progress automatically each cycle. Even tiers give +1 permanent MC on a resource of the dominant faction on the Nexus-Core choosing. Both sound great. But every even tier also costs -1 MC Cultural. NA 10 is -5 MC Cultural flat, no negotiation.

The tie-breaking rule matters: if factions are equal in automated building control, each rolls their faction die, highest picks. Automation concentrates power. Whoever controls the infrastructure controls which resource grows.

The Cultural die shrinking while every other resource thrives isn’t a bug. It’s entropy in a different register. Resources can die quietly, one downgrade at a time, without anyone rolling badly. Just by optimizing everything else.

I wrote a note to myself during this phase: “The colony won the economic war. Maybe not the human one. That’s a choice, not an error.”

Where This Ends Up

The GM’s job becomes facilitate consequences, not audit numbers. The system tracks three things: what die is each resource on right now, what’s the current MC, and what happened when the roll failed. The tension comes from probability shifting visibly over time, not from inventory management.

The fractal coherence matters too. The same die language applies to gear. A D8 knife degrading to D6 uses the same vocabulary as Vital resources going from D10 to D8. Players learn one system and it scales from their pocket knife to their civilization.

Where I’m still working: six resource rolls per cycle is perhaps a problem, and I’ve been exploring a Crisis Roll model where only the most stressed resource gets tested each cycle, with others tracked as latent threats. Less bookkeeping, more dread. I’m not sure it’s better yet.

Have you used a TTRPG resource die system at your table, and what made the depletion feel real rather than just a number going down?

Sol Fracta’s TTRPG resource die system doesn’t track numbers — it tracks dice.
