What would its wear even look like?”

I thought about it for maybe three seconds.

Its uniqueness is its wear.

That answer felt right the moment I said it. It still does.

TTRPG weapon durability in Sol Fracta runs on a die ladder — D10 to D8 to D6 to D4 to D2 — until the item fails at the worst possible moment.

Dans Sol Fracta, everything degrades. That’s not flavor, it’s mechanical law. Every piece of equipment has a ND. Roll high on your damage? Your knife downgrades. Your armor absorbs one hit too many? It drops a tier. The system is built around the idea that survival is a maintenance problem. You can craft better, refine, rebuild, but entropy is always working against you.

Except for one item on Laïs Zihi’s character sheet. The Knight’s Claymore.

The graphene claymore has no ND. It never triggers a wear test, not even on a 9 or 10. It doesn’t downgrade. Ever. Mechanically, that’s almost nothing, a rule you never apply. But put it next to everything else in the system, and it becomes enormous.

Graphene in Sol Fracta is the dominant structural material of the year 3000. Strong, light, versatile. But even in 3000, an Ordo Crucis claymore — forged with ultrasonic vibrations in the blade, fitted personally for its Knight after fifteen to eighteen years of training — isn’t something a young colony produces in cycle three. It’s not equipment you buy. It’s not something you loot.

That scarcity is load-bearing. If graphene were everywhere, the exception wouldn’t mean anything.

Here’s the contrast that lives in actual play. Take the rusty D2 knife someone finds in cycle one. Over two hundred cycles of reforges, near-deaths, repairs, and decisions that cost something, that knife could become Rustyheart, a legendary D10 blade with history written into every scar. The system fully supports that arc. It’s one of the things I’m most proud of.

But Rustyheart will never be the graphene claymore. Not because it’s weaker, at D10, it might not be. Because they’re asking different questions. The knife asks: what can you build from nothing? The claymore asks: what does it mean to carry something that time itself can’t take from you?

Both paths are valid. Both are interesting. The fact that they coexist in the same mechanical framework, and that the claymore’s power is literally the absence of a mechanic, only works because the wear system is absolute everywhere else.

An exception is only meaningful if the rule has no other exceptions.

Worth being precise about what “unbreakable” actually means in play. The claymore wins on durability and reach. It doesn’t win on everything. A more compact weapon in a pressurized corridor, a blade that’s been reforged with specific modifications, a tool built for a context the claymore wasn’t, those trade-offs are real and the system respects them. Indestructible isn’t the same as optimal.

What makes the claymore untouchable isn’t just the material. It’s the Ordo Crucis. Some have been stolen over the centuries. None stayed stolen for long. Carrying one without the sigil on your chest is a declaration of war against an order that has very long institutional memory. The theft problem solves itself.

As for how they’re made : rumors say the forging process is semi-artisanal. In a world of industrial 3D printing, that’s almost an insult. The Order’s smiths aren’t talking. Nobody knows what it means exactly, except that it can’t be reverse-engineered cleanly. And Laïs knows her blade is singular. Every Knight does. That knowledge is part of what the claymore is, not equipment. Signature.

The graphene claymore doesn’t make Laïs invincible. It tells you the very quality of her faction gear.

How does TTRPG weapon durability work at your table, and have you ever designed an item that was more interesting for what it couldn’t do?

In Sol Fracta, TTRPG weapon durability means every item wears down — except one.
